Revelation 2:24 gives Christ’s words to Thyatira. He says, “But unto you I say, and unto the
rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak, I will put upon you no other burden but to hold fast till I come.’ The lies and false teaching called their opinions the depths of God. Similarly, the false teachers would always starts, “Thus saith the Lord” or “The Word of the Lord came to me saying.” It is very common to hear someone each week tell me that God told them something. The often confuse the still small voices with their conscience. As we search for answers and pass decisions, we often talk to ourselves as we work through problems and unanswered questions. As soon as the pieces fit together perfectly like a puzzle, many will think that God gave them the answers. They cannot put their search on a back burner and take the needed time to research and compare their findings with Scripture. They have to know very soon and are convinced that if they pray, God will give them what they want almost immediately. Some are like these poor souls who called the workings of their own mind “the depths of God”.
Paul writes to brethren in Thessalonica about God sending a strong delusion (“working of error”) to someone that they might believe a lie. Why would God do this and does He do it arbitrarily? 2 Thessalonians 2:11 reveals that those who receive these lies are those who do not love truth or “the truth.” They would rather hear the whisperings of their own mind which are the hissing of the serpent rather than the inspirations of God.
