God is —a Consuming Fire, and His will is that we are consumed by Him or give all we have to Him. In the end, we will be consumed by Him, either in our destruction or in giving ourselves totally to Him—either way the selfish creature comes to an end. Though we have little to offer compared to what He has already given us, we cannot treat Him with indifference. He will require either a total commitment now or a consuming fire, later.
We may not want to serve a God like that because of such demands, but let’s not forget that He is our Creator and Sustainer. Knowing from whence we came and all the provisions that He has granted, we cannot plant one foot firmly on the world and stretch out the other foot at home with Him and expect God to be pleased.
Take heed to yourselves, lest you forget the covenant of the LORD our God which He made with you and make for yourselves a carved image in the form of anything which the LORD your God has forbidden you. For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. Deuteronomy 4:23-24
