In Matthew 13:39-40, Jesus explains the parable of the wheat and tares. He said that the “harvest is at the end of this age” (sunteleia aionos). Jesus was, then, living in the Mosaic age. Verse 43 has Jesus saying that at the end of the age the righteous would “shine like the brightness of the firmament.” This may not appear to be a significant statement until one realizes that it is a direct quote from Daniel 12:3. Daniel foretold the “time of the end” (heos kairou sunteleias, Daniel 12:4, LXX). When Daniel saw the vision of the end, he asked when it would take place. The answer that was given was, “when the power of the holy people has been completely shattered all of these things shall be finished” (Daniel 12:7). This has reference to the fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70.
Therefore, we have an inspired definition of the term “the end of the age.” It is when the power of the holy people has been completely shattered.
