Our text reads, “For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.  For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. These two verses package the salvation offered by the Messiah. The “whosoever” emphasizes that there is no difference between Jew and Gentile. Neither has a monopoly on this redemptive plan. “The same Lord over all is rich unto all” but he refines the all to only those who call upon him.

The reference to “calling upon the Lord” counters any thought of meriting personal righteousness. Salvation has always depended on Christ, without which there could be no remission of sins. To “call on the name of the Lord” is to rely and depend upon the Lord, not ourselves (cf. Acts 2:21, Rom. 10:13). It is critical to see the connection and significance of adding this phrase in Annanias’ words, “Why do you tarry, arise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” Paul was told to go to Damascus and there he would learn what he must do. But, the dong of them and the washing away of sins was not to be interpreted as having accomplished it on our own. Ananias adds, “calling on the name of the Lord” to modify the command to be baptized and wash away his sins. Those who carry through with what they were told (character of true faith), are known as the class of people “who call on His name” (cf. Acts 9:14, 21). In the salutation of 1 Corinthians 1, Paul describes the saints as those “who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours” (1 Cor. 1:2). To call on his name is to rely on His power to redeem and forgive.

This conclusion is proven by its use in Acts 3-4 and the healing the lame man in Jerusalem. In Acts 3:6, Peter told him to rise up and walk in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Some mistakenly think there is some magical power in verbally saying the name of Christ. Similarly, some seem to think that a prayer that doesn’t end with “in Jesus name,” doesn’t make it to the throne room of God. This is not the meaning of the phrase. Later, when Peter and John were brought before the Sanhedrin in Acts 4, they began their inquisition with these words, “By what power, or by what name, have ye done this? Peter further explains by adding in verse nine, “by what means the impotent man is made whole.” To do something of that magnitude requires some means beyond the ordinary. So, “by what means,” “by what power” or “in whose name”? These questions amount to the same question. The answer is given by Peter in verse 10, “Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. In other words, the means, power, or authority by which the man was made whole was Jesus Christ. Salvation from sin is the same. It is by means of Jesus Christ. So, to call on his name is to look to Him for forgiveness. You can cry, “O Lord, Jesus, Jesus” all night or all week but invoking the name is not going to save anyone. He is the means of salvation, and faith in Him or in Him is relying on His redemptive work and His Word for salvation. It is a gift but one that has conditions of pardon attached to it. But, as Jesus teaches in Luke 17:10, “So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.” Faith in Christ requires our obedience but it should never take away from it being a gift. Relying on Him is calling upon his name and that never ends in this life.

And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name.”

Acts 3:6, where Peter heals a crippled beggar by saying, “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”
