John sees an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in mid-heaven, “Come and be gathered unto the great supper of God.” Regarding the destruction of Jerusalem, Jesus said, “Wheresoever the carcass is, there will the vultures be gathered together” (Matt. 24:28; Lk. 17:37). While the marriage supper of the Lamb was going on, birds feasted on the dead bodies at Jerusalem. Disregarding the marriage feast of the Son, the city became the great supper of God for the vultures and unclean birds (Matt. 22:1-7). Ironically, they devoured the prophets were being devoured by the vultures.

The birds are invited to eat the flesh of kings, captains, mighty men, both small and great. It is called the great supper of God because their death was by the hand of God left for the vultures to eat. Nothing in this picture is honorable or respectable. There is no ceremony, no marker of remembrance or honor; only rebels whose bodies provide a feast for the birds to eat. This is what happens to those who treat the invitation of God and His Son with disregard.
