Revelation 20 speaks of the binding of Satan at the start of the thousand-year reign of Christ, and 1 Corinthians 15 speaks of the “end” of the age when he delivers the kingdom to God after abolishing all authority and power. It seems clear that 1 Corinthians 15 is the “first resurrection” of Revelation 20.
Comparing these texts, we propose the following conclusions:
(1) The two texts support a timeline in which Jesus binds the strong man, and takes from him the keys of death and hades (cf. Rev. 1:) ). In this picture, death and hades continue to exist in as much as the human race continues to die physically. But, Jesus has the keys so that they do not stay as those who died before his death. Revelation 14:13 reads,
Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from henceforth (from now on): yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; for their works follow with them.
(2) After putting down his enemies, the kingdom era begins (the millennial reign of Christ with the redeemed saints in heaven and earth) and the king’s marriage to “new Jerusalem” commences. When the old regime ended and the marriage with it, Jesus presents to the Father his new and glorious “bride without spot, wrinkle, or any such thing” (Eph. 5:27). Looking at the chronology of Revelation 20 reveals that Death and Hades will not be cast into the abyss until after the thousand years year reign of Christ after Satan is loosed for a season, and after the final binding of Satan (Rev. 20:14).
